The 2027 NFHS softball rule changes:
- One-way electronic communication (1-9-6): a coach in the dugout may now send one-way communication to the pitcher and/or catcher while the team is on defense (previously the catcher only). Players can't send anything back, and no player may record or transmit audio or video from the playing surface.
- Initial play (2-46-3a): once a fair batted ball touches any fielder, including the pitcher, it's treated as a deflected ball, not an untouched one, for interference rulings.
- Courtesy runners (8-10-2): the requirement that the pitcher and catcher on the starting lineup must face the first batter has been removed.
- Umpire uniforms (10-4-2): state associations may now set the umpire uniform standard. Heather gray pants were already due to be dropped on January 1, 2027.
- Player uniforms (3-2-3): from January 1, 2027, uniforms may show only a single manufacturer's logo, the school name, school logo, mascot and/or the player's name. No advertisements, messages or team slogans.
The 2027 points of emphasis are taking or simulating a signal from the catcher, one-way electronic communication, and the NFHS Authenticating Mark, which must be on every game ball. Report balls without it to your state association.
