Not during a school activity. Regulation 4(4) of the Regulations for Safety Measures at Public Schools (as amended in 2006) says no educator, parent, learner or any other person may possess or use any of the following during any school activity, which includes school sport at home or away:
- alcohol;
- illegal drugs;
- any illegal substance;
- dangerous objects (for example firearms, explosives or anything that can be used to cause bodily harm, unless used for education purposes).
Also under the regulations:
- All public schools are declared drug-free and dangerous-object-free zones, and nobody may enter school premises under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.
- Anyone who breaks the regulations may be removed from the school premises.
- Schools must work with their local police station so that there is visible policing at all sporting and cultural events at the school.
