What is my jurisdiction as an Inspector of Turns or Judge of Stroke?
Rule- South Africa
- Swimming South Africa
- World Aquatics rules
- Stroke and turn judges
- All ages
- 2025/26
- Officials
Under World Aquatics rules (Part Two, Article 2), which SSA applies at national competitions:
Inspectors of Turns (one per lane at each end of the pool)
| Phase | Jurisdiction |
|---|---|
| Start (start end) | From the starting signal until the first arm stroke is completed (second arm stroke in breaststroke) |
| Each turn | From the beginning of the last arm stroke before the touch until the first arm stroke after the turn is completed (second in breaststroke) |
| Finish | From the beginning of the last arm stroke before the touch |
Start-end inspectors also judge relay take-offs and install the backstroke ledge in their lane (set at zero).
Judges of Stroke stand on each side of the pool, check that the stroke rules for the event are followed throughout, and watch turns and finishes to assist the Inspectors of Turns.
Everyone reports breaches within their own jurisdiction to the Referee, and decides independently of other officials.
