Freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley races start with a dive (World Aquatics rules, Part Two, Article 4.1):
- Once swimmers have removed all clothing except swimwear, the Referee gives a short series of whistles, inviting them to get ready at the starting end.
- A long whistle: swimmers step onto the starting platform and stay there.
- When swimmers and officials are ready, the Referee holds out an arm towards the Starter. From then on the swimmers are under the Starter's control, and the arm stays out until the starting signal.
- The Starter says "take your marks", and swimmers immediately take their starting position.
- When all swimmers are stationary, the Starter gives the starting signal.
At the Olympic Games, World Aquatics Championships and other World Aquatics events the command is given in English through loudspeakers at each block.
