What are the reporting and return-to-play requirements after a concussion?
Rule- Western Australia
- WA Football
- Junior football
- Years 3-6
- Modified competitions
- First aid
- 2026
- Sports trainers
Reporting: all confirmed and suspected concussions are reported on PlayHQ as soon as possible, ideally no later than 9am on the Monday after the match. Team managers must make sure concussion reports are submitted, and injuries must be accurately assessed, recorded and documented.
Return to train and play: WA Football aligns with the national concussion guidelines from the Australian Institute of Sport and the Australian Sports Commission.
- The player must follow the graded loading program and supply a medical certificate before returning to full training and playing.
- The 21 days in the guidelines is a minimum, not a standard wait. Each concussion is unique; a more conservative approach applies to a history of concussion or recurring symptoms.
- Second concussion in a season: must be assessed and cleared by a doctor or practitioner who specialises in concussion management.
- Third concussion in a season (counting club, school, AFL9s and any other competition): WA Football highly recommends no play for the rest of the season and continued specialist monitoring.
A health care practitioner means a specialist sports doctor or physician, a GP, or an AHPRA-registered practitioner with appropriate training and experience in concussion assessment and management.
