- Scorers
Law 3 (2026 Laws) sets out the scorers' duties:
- Two scorers are appointed to record all runs scored, all wickets taken and, where appropriate, the number of overs bowled.
- Check frequently that your records agree with the other scorer's.
- Agree with the umpires the runs, wickets and (where appropriate) overs at least at every interval other than drinks, and at the end of the match.
- Accept all instructions and signals from the umpires and acknowledge each signal immediately.
The umpires are responsible for the correctness of the scores (Laws 2.15 and 16.8), and once they have agreed the final scores with you, the result can't be changed (Law 16.10).
Which Laws? The current edition is the MCC 2017 Code, 4th Edition (2026), in force from 1 October 2026. League and competition playing conditions can change some Laws (for example free hits, wides or overs per bowler), and those apply to that competition.
