If a team is short-handed (below the opponent's on-ice strength at the time of the goal) because of one or more minor or bench minor penalties, and the opponent scores:
- The first non-coincidental minor then being served by the short-handed team ends automatically.
- Only one penalty ends per goal.
It does not apply when:
- the goal is scored on a penalty shot or is an awarded goal
- the penalty is a major, match or misconduct (those run their full time)
- the minors are coincidental (equal minors to both teams with immediate substitution)
When two minors on the same team expire at the same time, the team's captain decides which player returns to the ice first.
