Under the NFHS scorers and timers instructions, the official scorer sits at the scorer's table and is responsible for:
- Recording points scored by each wrestler when the referee signals them.
- Circling the first point(s) scored in the regulation match, including overtime.
- Recording which wrestler makes the choice at the start of the 2nd and 3rd periods (and overtime), and the starting positions.
- Checking constantly with the visiting team's scorer.
- Immediately telling the match timekeeper of any disagreement about the score, and making sure the scoreboard operator and assistant scorers show the correct score.
- Recording the completion time of each match (for example, the time of a fall or technical fall).
- Giving the referee the scorebook at the end of a dual meet to verify team scores and sign.
In a dual meet, keep a running team score after each match.
Assistant scorers record the points each wrestler earns during the match.
