It means the organiser holds a UKA road race licence, issued through the home country athletics federation, and has agreed to run the race under the UK Athletics Rules for Competition (UKA Rule CR1 S2(4)).
- A race needs a licence if it gives awards or prizes by finishing order, or pays appearance money to athletes.
- Before applying, the organiser must consult the local authority Safety Advisory Group (or equivalent) and inform the local authorities and emergency services, and meet UKA licence standards.
- Licensed races must print "Under UKA Rules" and their unique licence code on all race material, and give the affiliated club member discount on senior entries.
- An advertised distance must be measured by a qualified course measurer.
- Under UKA Rule TR4 S3(13), runners who compete in a road race without a UKA licence may make themselves liable to suspension. This doesn't apply to fun runs.
- parkrun is a timed run, not a race, so it falls outside the UKA Rules for Competition.
