Under UKA Rule G2 S6, English county championships are open to eligible athletes with a county qualification, gained by:
- birth in the county, or
- nine months' continuous residence in the county immediately before the championship, or
- nine months' service in an HM Forces unit stationed in the county.
Points to note:
- Belonging to a club affiliated to the county does not by itself give you a county qualification.
- Students don't gain residence by living in the county during term time only, though a county may relax this for its own championships.
- Once you've run in one county's championship (or represented a county in an inter-county competition), you can't run in another county's championship in the same competition year.
- County team championships are open to clubs affiliated to the county association, HM Forces units stationed there, and schools, colleges or businesses in the county, and every team member needs a county qualification. Athletes whose first-claim club isn't affiliated to the county may run for a second-claim club if they hold the county qualification.
