Under UKA Rule G2 S1, all athletes in the Under 14 age group and above must be registered with their home country federation (England Athletics in England) to compete under UKA rules. The exemption for unattached individual runners covers road, fell, hill, mountain and trail running, not cross country.
- An unregistered competitor is liable to disqualification, and the result is worked out as if they hadn't run. In a club competition, that doesn't necessarily disqualify the club.
- Athletes registering for the first time get one week's grace for their club to register them after a race.
- England Athletics may relax the requirement through a competition's licence.
- In open senior cross country races, licensed organisers must charge an Additional Unattached Entry Fee, set by England Athletics, to any entrant without a current individual registration (UKA Rule CR1 S2(3)).
- Inter-club races with no entry fee are not open competitions.
