Rules of Rowing 2-602 sets out five penalties. Officials can impose them without anyone filing a protest, and a penalty on a crew applies to every member of it.
| Penalty | Effect |
|---|---|
| Reprimand | Informal caution with no immediate effect, but repeated behavior can be treated as intentional |
| Warning | Two warnings in the same race mean exclusion. A false start counts as a warning. Warnings expire once that race is completed (they carry over to a rerow) |
| Exclusion | The crew is removed from that event but can still race other events |
| Disqualification | The crew is removed from all remaining races and events at the regatta. Presumed for flagrant or intentional safety or fairness violations, and always reported to USRowing. Officials may disqualify one rower instead of the whole crew |
| Relegation | The crew is placed last in the race. Used for equipment violations such as an underweight boat or improper strapping |
Common triggers:
- Not being attached to the start 2 minutes before the scheduled time can bring a warning, and not being there by the scheduled time can bring exclusion (2-301).
- Breaking the traffic pattern or operating unsafely (2-205). The penalty applies to the crew's next race.
- Receiving outside coaching or advice during a race. Shouting with the unaided voice from shore is allowed (2-409).
- Unsportsmanlike conduct (2-410).
