Under Rules of Rowing 4-103(h), a mixed crew must be made up of:
- 50% rowers who are qualified to compete in the women's category, and
- 50% rowers of any sex
The coxswain isn't counted. So a mixed eight has at least four rowers eligible for women's events, and a mixed double has at least one.
Related rules:
- A rower assigned female at birth can compete in any event. A rower assigned male at birth can't compete in women's events (4-103(h)). USRowing's full Gender Identity policy is in its CEO Policy Manual.
- Coxswains are exempt and can cox any event. The minimum coxswain weight for a mixed crew is 120 lb (4-105.1).
- In a Masters mixed event, every rower must be a Master, and the crew's age category comes from the average age of the rowers.
