To race in USA Cycling races, you must show a valid USA Cycling racing license (or an international license from another UCI-affiliated federation). There are two main options:
- Annual license (comes with a Race membership): available from age 6 and valid for one year from purchase. It lets you race any category and class you qualify for at domestic races.
- One-day license: bought online or at the event, valid for one day. It's only for the lowest category (Novice) and can't be used at championship events.
For riders under 18:
- A parent or legal guardian must read and sign the liability release as well as the rider.
- A parent or guardian can cancel a minor's license by writing to USA Cycling.
You don't have to join a club to get a license or race. You can only race as a club member, or wear its jersey, if you're registered with that club, and you can only belong to one club per discipline.
Junior national championships:
- 16 and younger: US citizens with a valid annual USA Cycling license (or a foreign international license), or permanent residents (green card) with a valid annual USA Cycling license.
- 17-18: US citizens with an international (UCI) license.
