Every rider:
- Road, cyclocross and MTB: a bike with a freewheel and one working brake on each wheel.
- Track: a single-cog fixed-gear bike with no brakes, derailleurs or quick releases. The exception is non-championship pursuits and time trials, where those parts can be fitted as long as only one gear works.
- You are responsible for making sure your bike is safe and in good condition. Officials can inspect it at any time, and an illegal bike is refused a start, or disqualified if it's found after the start.
Riders 14 and under must use a massed-start bike (a standard road or track bike that's legal in every event of its discipline), which means:
- no aero bars: no forearm supports and no handlebar extensions that point forward, so no time trial bike, even in a time trial
- wheels with at least 16 spokes
- no wheel covers
For older riders, a time trial can still be limited to massed-start bikes for some or all classes if the race announcement says so.
