Standard: a securely fastened helmet that meets the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) bicycle helmet standard or the US DOT standard. Helmets with only European CEN certification are allowed only at races on the UCI international calendar.
When: at all times when you're on a bike at an event held under a USA Cycling permit, including club rides. That means any riding near the race from the start of registration until the last awards are handed out. Warming up on rollers or a stationary trainer is the only exception.
Mountain bike: a full-face helmet is required for downhill and four-cross (4X). Body armor, elbow and knee pads and full-finger gloves are strongly recommended for all gravity events.
Penalties at local one-day events:
| Infraction | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Arriving at the start without a helmet | Start refused |
| Taking your helmet off during the race | Disqualification |
| Riding on the course without a helmet when not racing | Warning, then DSQ and a $20 fine |
