How many officials does a match need?

- Referees
Under World Aquatics rules (Part Six, Article 3), the full panel is two referees, two assistant referees, two timekeepers, two secretaries and video assistant referee(s).
At events that aren't World Aquatics events (such as SSA competitions), matches should use the full panel if possible. If not, a match must have at least four technical officials, not counting any video assistant referee, including:
- Referees and assistant referees in one of these combinations: 2 referees + 2 assistant referees; 1 referee + 2 assistant referees; or 2 referees and no assistant referees (the referees then take over the assistant referees' duties, without having to make their signals strictly).
- At least one timekeeper and one secretary. With one of each, the timekeeper runs possession time (the shot clock) and the secretary keeps the game clock, timeouts, intervals, the match record and exclusion times.
Where numbers differ between matches at the same competition, priority goes to the more important matches; for matches of equal importance, officials are shared equally or the difference is decided randomly by the organisers.
