Calls during play
| Call | When |
|---|---|
| Fault | A serve isn't good |
| Down | Ball hit the tin, the floor before the front wall, or the front wall then the tin |
| Out | Ball hit on or above the out-line, a fixture above it, the top of a wall, or left the court or went through a fixture |
| Not up | Not struck correctly, bounced twice, or touched the striker or their clothing |
| Stop | Players must stop immediately |
If you're unsure about a serve or return, make no call.
After each rally, call without delay, in this order:
- Anything affecting the score (e.g. "Stroke to Brown", "Yes let", "No let", repeating the referee's decision).
- The score, server's score first, with "hand out" when the server changes.
- Comments: "Game ball", "Match ball", or "10-all: a player must win by 2 points" (first time only in each game).
Examples: "Not up. Hand out, 4–3." "Stroke to Jones, 10–8, Game ball."
Match and game announcements
- Start: "Smith to serve, Jones to receive, best of 5 games, love-all."
- End of game: "11–3, game to Smith. Smith leads 1 game to love."
- Next game: "Smith leads 2 games to 1. Jones to serve, love-all."
