- Referees
A major penalty rules the offender off the floor for 5 minutes (Rule 7.3.1).
- If two power-play goals are scored on the penalized team, that team may put a player back on the floor to return to even strength, but the offender serves the full 5 minutes and returns at the next non-technical stoppage after the penalty expires.
- A second major to the same player in the same game means the player is ruled off for the balance of the game: the player is assessed the major plus a game misconduct and is replaced in the penalty box by the in-home player immediately (Rule 7.3.2).
- In the last 5 minutes of regulation, or at any time in overtime, when a minor and a major are assessed to opposing players on the same stoppage, the 3-minute differential is served immediately as a major penalty and recorded on the penalty clock as 3 minutes (Rule 7.3.3).
- The scorer must tell the referees when a player accumulates two 5-minute penalties (an automatic game misconduct).
