Under the NHA Rules of Racing, a horse is disqualified if an objection is upheld because, for example:
- its rider weighed in more than 0.5 kg under the weight they weighed out at, or failed to weigh in (Rules 66.4, 68.2.11, 68.2.12, 69.7);
- it left the course during the race (Rule 62.4);
- the rider touched the ground with part of their body during the race;
- the rider was not the one identified at weighing out;
- a prohibited electric, electronic or mechanical device or prohibited equipment was used;
- the horse ran in a race it was not entered for, was not qualified for, was suspended, or carried less than the correct weight (these can be raised up to 12:00 on the 10th day after the race, Rule 68.3).
For an incorrect type of crop, a substitute for a crop or certain gear breaches, the horse is only disqualified if the breach gave it an advantage that affected the result (Rule 69.5). When a horse is disqualified, the others move up in their original finishing order.
