- Work with a club: every competition should be planned with a registered athletics club, and the organiser needs a mandate from a club, province or associate member (ASA Rules 13.1 and 22.1).
- List it in time: clubs list their competitions with their province by August each year; provinces list them with ASA by September. National and provincial fixtures for the next year are published in October (Rule 22).
- Late additions: no new competitions are added to the provincial fixture lists after October of the previous year. A province may still host such an event, but it is not covered by the ASA athlete medical insurance, and your promotional material must say so.
- Why it matters: competitions not on the ASA national or provincial fixtures lists may be declared ineligible, and licensed athletes who take part may be declared ineligible too (Rule 1.3).
- Permit competitions: races with total prize money over R500,000 are permit competitions. Apply to ASA through the provincial body by 31 October of the previous year (Rule 1.5).
- Foreign athletes: provincial events that want to invite foreign athletes must apply to ASA, and are then listed on the national fixtures list.
