Only the marker (the defender within 10 feet of the thrower's pivot) can count. The count is "stalling one, two, ... ten", loud enough for the thrower to hear, with at least one second between the start of each number. A legal count to ten takes at least 9 seconds.
- If you haven't released the disc at the first sound of "ten", it's a stall: a turnover, and play stops.
- An uncontested stall: the disc stays at that spot, the new offense puts it down and says "3-2-1 disc in".
- You can contest if you released before "ten" or the count was fast. If the pass was complete, it comes back to you and the count resumes at 8 (or 6 for a second fast-count stall in the same possession). If the pass was incomplete, it's still a turnover.
- If the defense switches markers, the new marker starts again at "stalling one".
Where the count resumes after common calls:
| Situation | Resume at |
|---|---|
| Uncontested defensive foul or violation | 1 |
| Uncontested offensive foul or violation, or a team timeout | Count reached + 1, or 9 if over 8 |
| Contested call, offsetting calls, pick, technical timeout | Count reached + 1, or 6 if over 5 |
| Marking violation (no stoppage) | Count reached - 1 |
After any stoppage, the count must restart with the word "stalling".
