Alongside the usual behavioural technical fouls (disrespect, taunting, faking a foul, delaying the game and so on), the IWBF rules (Art. 36.2.1) list these as technical fouls:
- taking your feet off the footrests to gain an unfair advantage;
- using any part of your lower limbs to gain an unfair advantage or to steer the wheelchair;
- lifting (raising both buttocks off the seat or cushion to gain an advantage);
- leaving the playing court to gain an unfair advantage.
Penalty: 1 free throw to the opponents. Play restarts with a throw-in by the team that had, or was entitled to, the ball.
Disqualification: under the IWBF 2024 rules, a player is disqualified for the game after 2 technical fouls, 2 unsportsmanlike fouls, or 1 of each. The IWBF rules still use the unsportsmanlike foul. FIBA's 2026 change to "disruptive" and "flagrant" fouls applies to running basketball and is not part of the IWBF 2024 rules.
Chair check: a head coach who asks for an opponent's chair to be checked is charged a technical foul ('C') if the chair turns out to be legal.
Exceeding the 14-point limit on court is a technical foul on the coach.
