- Position: stand behind the baseline, between the imaginary extensions of the center mark and the sideline (ITF Rule 16). Serve from the right side first in every game, then alternate (Rule 17).
- Foot fault: during the service motion, touching the baseline or court with either foot, touching outside the extension of the sideline or the center mark, or walking or running into position (Rule 18). Having one or both feet off the ground is fine.
- Let: a serve that touches the net, strap or band and is otherwise good is replayed. So is a serve hit before the receiver is ready. A let doesn't cancel a previous fault (Rule 22). Any player may call a service let, before the return goes out of play or is hit by the serving side (Code 27).
- Who calls serves: the receiving side calls the serve. The server and partner shouldn't call a first serve out, but must call out a second serve that either clearly sees out (Code 26).
- Calling foot faults: the receiving side may call a foot fault only after warning the server and trying to get an official, and only if it's flagrant (Code 24).
