World Squash Singles Rule 5:
- The winner of the spin of a racket serves first.
- At the start of each game and each time you win the serve, you choose which box to serve from. While you keep the serve, you alternate boxes. After a let you serve again from the same box.
- Don't serve until the marker has called the score and the receiver is ready.
A serve is good if:
- you drop or throw the ball from your hand or racket and strike it correctly before it touches anything else (you can have more than one attempt to hit it);
- when you strike it, one foot is on the floor inside the service box, not touching any line of the box;
- it goes directly to the front wall between the service line and the out-line, without hitting the front and side wall at the same time;
- unless the receiver volleys it, it first bounces in the opposite back quarter without touching a line; and
- it isn't out.
Otherwise it's a fault and the receiver wins the rally. A serve touching the service line, short line or half-court line is a fault. If you drop the ball and don't swing at it, it isn't a serve and you can start again.
