Scotland uses lower tackle heights in the age grade game than in elite rugby:
| Age group | Tackle height |
|---|---|
| U9 (P4) to U14, boys and girls | Waist and below ("belly tackle") |
| U15 boys and U16 girls to U18 | Below the base of the sternum (the same as the adult community game) |
Waist and below (U9 to U14):
- The tackler and any second tackler must tackle at the waist or below, including at a pick-and-go.
- You can't target or play the ball in the tackle.
Below the sternum (U15 boys and U16 girls upwards):
- An assist tackler can also tackle below the base of the sternum, and can rip the ball using their arms, without active shoulder contact.
At every age:
- Swing tackles and judo-style throws are banned. The tackler must bring the ball carrier to ground safely.
- A high tackle or a swing tackle gives away a penalty.
