Once you've returned your scorecard in stroke play:
- Score higher than you actually took: the higher score stands.
- Score lower than you actually took, or no score for a hole: you're disqualified. (In Stableford, a hole with no score returned simply scores zero points.)
Exception for unknown penalties: if a hole score is too low only because you left out penalty strokes you didn't know about before returning your card, you're not disqualified. If it's found before the competition closes, the Committee adds the missed penalty strokes. This exception doesn't apply if the missed penalty was disqualification, or if you were told a penalty might apply (or were unsure) and didn't raise it with the Committee before returning your card.
Handicap and adding up: there's no penalty for mistakes in your handicap or the totals; the Committee is responsible for those under the Rules of Golf.
