Your marker (set by the Committee or chosen by you in a way it approves) keeps your card:
- After each hole, they confirm your number of strokes, including penalty strokes, and write the gross score.
- At the end of the round, they certify (sign) the hole scores. You must keep the same marker all round unless the Committee approves a change.
You must:
- check each hole score carefully and raise any issues with the Committee,
- make sure your marker has certified the card,
- not change a score your marker entered unless the marker agrees or the Committee approves,
- certify the card yourself and return it promptly to the Committee. After that you can't change it.
If you don't meet these requirements, you're disqualified (unless it was caused by your marker, beyond your control, such as the marker leaving with your card).
In South Africa, GolfRSA also requires you to show your Handicap Index on the card, and the Committee may ask for the tees played and your Course or Playing Handicap. Under the Rules of Golf, adding up and applying handicaps is the Committee's job, so there's no penalty for mistakes there.
