- Players
- Each team has no more than 11 players on the field at any one time. The minimum number of players per team allowed on the field is 8, and the match is terminated if a team's current participants drop below 8. Players temporarily suspended (sin bin or blood bin) count as current participants, and dismissed players do not.
- Each team may use interchange players if their names are given to the referee before the match starts. Interchanges are only effected after a player has left the field, and the replacement takes the field immediately in an onside position with the permission of a touch judge or interchange official.
- League governing bodies may choose to adopt either unlimited or limited interchange for individual competitions.
- Apart from a player replacing an injured player who has left the field, a player cannot be interchanged during a play-the-ball except when play is stopped because of injury.
- If an interchange is made when a kick at goal is to be taken, the interchange player cannot take the kick.
- When a player is bleeding excessively, the referee directs them to leave the field for attention or to seek medical attention on the field.
