Tell a coach or athletic trainer right away, and stop playing. Under NFHS rules, any player showing signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion must be removed from the game immediately and can't return until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.
Symptoms to speak up about (CDC HEADS UP):
- headache, dizziness or balance problems, nausea, vision problems
- sensitivity to light or noise
- feeling foggy, groggy or slowed down; trouble concentrating or remembering
- feeling more emotional, irritable or anxious than usual; sleep changes
Get emergency help for a headache that gets worse, repeated vomiting, slurred speech, weakness or numbness, seizures, increasing confusion, one pupil larger than the other, or passing out.
Symptoms can show up hours or days later and are usually worst 1-2 days after the injury, so keep reporting them even after you leave the field.
