Play should be continuous from the first serve. Maximum breaks (Regulation 23.4), timed from the end of one point to the first serve of the next:
| Break | Standard format | FAST4 format |
|---|---|---|
| Between points | 25 seconds | 25 seconds |
| Changing ends after a game | 90 seconds | 60 seconds, no sitting down during a set |
| End of a set | 2 minutes | 90 seconds |
- After the first game of each set and during a tie-break, change ends without a break.
- The receiver must play at the server's reasonable pace.
- Time violations: first a warning, then a fault if you're serving or a point penalty if you're receiving.
Toilet and change-of-attire breaks (Regulation 23.6):
- Two per singles player per match; in doubles, two per pair (leaving together counts as one).
- You need permission from the Chair Umpire, or, without one, the Referee or their designee.
- Toilet breaks should be taken at the end of a set; change-of-attire breaks only at the end of a set.
- They can't be used just to refill drinks. Any break taken once the warm-up has started counts.
Medical treatment (Regulation 24): on-court treatment is only allowed at changeovers and set breaks, with permission, and generally not on more than two consecutive breaks for the same condition.
