HAMC publishes the eligible years of birth for each age-based competition. The eligible years include the year of birth one year younger than the advertised age, so that players can be selected for the following year's Australian teams at World Masters Hockey events. Player age is calculated as at 31 December in the year following the current year's national championship. So:
- 34-year-old players play in the 35s competition
- 39-year-old players play in the 40s competition
- 44-year-old players play in the 45s competition
- and so on
Years of birth table: Hockey Australia publishes a Masters Years of Birth Eligibility Table covering the next 10 years of competition. For example, it shows players born in 1993 become eligible for the 35s in 2027, and players born in 1988 play in the 40s in 2027. The published table is the 2025 edition and is marked "DRAFT Regs Rev_2.0".
