Under Cricket Australia's junior match formats, the ball depends on the stage rather than being a separate girls' ball until Stage 3:
| Stage | Ages | Ball |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Under 11 and younger | Modified ball, 21 to 22.5 cm round, no heavier than 110 g |
| Stage 2 | Under 12 and Under 13 | 142 g hard or leather ball |
| Stage 3 | Under 14 to Under 18 | 142 g leather ball for female players, 156 g leather ball for male players |
So a girl in Stage 3 uses the 142 g ball, which is also the ball used in Stage 2. Some Cricket NSW competitions use the same weights for mixed groups. In the NSW Junior Community Cup, Under 12 and Under 13 teams (boys, girls and mixed) use a pink Kookaburra 142 g two-piece ball, and Under 15 teams use a 156 g ball. In the Cricket NSW Metro carnivals, Under 13 uses a Kookaburra Crown 142 g, Under 15 uses a Kookaburra Crown 156 g, and Under 11 uses a Kookaburra Star ball.
Smash Series Cricket uses soft balls, such as soft tennis or rubber balls.
