Under Byelaws 1.4.4 and 4.2.1, a compliant helmet and faceguard must:
- be certified fit for purpose and meet the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation (EU) 2016/425
- conform to one of these safety standards: I.S. 355:2006, ISO 10256-2:2016 or ASTM F1045-16
- stop a struck shinty ball or a swung standard caman passing through the guard: a maximum grid size of 60 mm horizontal by 28 mm vertical (a Bauer IMS 5.0 helmet, faceguard or visor is also accepted for adult players)
- be secured by a chin strap
- be free from sharp edges and projections
It is the player's and the club's responsibility to make sure the kit is compliant, and it is a specific disciplinary offence to claim, directly or indirectly, to be wearing a compliant helmet and faceguard when you are not. A player without compliant kit will not be allowed to play until it is provided.
