The laws require players, umpires and markers to wear flat-soled ("heel-less") footwear on the green (Appendix A.2.1).
Bowls South Africa's domestic regulation (A.2.2, Circular 40/2010) allows conventional shoes or sports shoes with:
- a continuous smooth sole, or a sole with a channel rise in the middle, as long as the sole is clearly one piece and the heel is not at a different height from the front;
- indented grooves for grip no deeper than 2 mm (a matchstick's thickness), and no protruding studs or lugs;
- a rear part at least 50% of the width of the widest part of the sole.
Sandals are acceptable if they have a back strap. Bowls South Africa can allow or disallow specific colours and brands of footwear.
