Toss (law 5.2). The skips in a team game (coaches or representatives in a side game, or opponents in Singles) toss a coin. The winner chooses either to place the mat and deliver the jack and first bowl, or to tell the opposing player to do so (the opponent cannot refuse). In ends after the first, apart from an extra end, the winner of the previous scoring end places the mat and delivers the jack and the first bowl (law 5.4).
Trial ends (law 5.1).
- One trial end must be played in each direction before the start of play in any game, or before continuing an unfinished game on another day.
- Trial ends are played on the rink the game will be played on.
- Each player uses no more than the number of bowls used in the game; a player who uses more loses the right to play any bowls remaining in the trial ends.
- Players can use any combination of bowls from different sets.
- The opponents of the team that started the first trial end start the second.
- For domestic play, the Controlling Body can limit trial ends to none or one in one direction.
Practice (law 4). A player or team that has already played on the same green that day can practise if they have a bye (no opponent in that round).
