Under the IWBF classification rules in effect from 1 October 2021, which Basketball Australia has adopted through its National Classification Program, a player must meet two criteria to join the Wheelchair Basketball pathway:
- Medical review: trained classifiers review medical documentation for an underlying health condition that causes one of six Eligible Impairments: impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, hypertonia, or ataxia or athetosis.
- Minimum Impairment Criteria (MIC): your eligible impairment is assessed against the MIC, which set out in the IWBF 2021 Player Classification Rules how severe an impairment must be.
Players who meet both are observed in training and, where relevant, in competition. Classifiers then assign a sport class and class status. Players not on the IWBF Classification Master List, including those classified before 1 October 2021, must go through the player evaluation process.
