The AFL National Female Community Football Guidelines (2019) recommend modified rules at junior and youth girls' gala days, "come and try" events and school gala days, whatever the players' age:
- Modified tackle only: a player in possession can be tackled by an opponent wrapping both arms around the area below the shoulders and above the knees, from the side, front or behind. A tackler from behind must not push in the back.
- No dumping: no one is to be deliberately dumped or taken to the ground. If the player with the ball is taken to ground in the tackle, they receive a free kick. If the umpire thinks they dropped deliberately to win a free kick, they are penalised for holding the ball.
- No bumping or slinging.
- Holding: a player without the ball gets a free kick if an opponent holds them.
- No kicking the ball off the ground unless accidental.
These are recommendations for gala days and "come and try" events, not rules for a regular season competition.
