Under the AFL National Community Football Policy Handbook (February 2026):
- Registering: you register through the Competition Management Platform. If you are under 18, your parent or legal guardian submits the registration, and the club then accepts it to make it active. Registration for each season opens on 1 October unless your league says otherwise.
- One registration only: you can register under one name and must not hold multiple concurrent registrations.
- Unregistered players: an unregistered player is ineligible to play.
- Transfers: you (or your parent or guardian if you are under 18, or the new club with your consent) submit a Transfer Request on the platform. The standard windows are 1 to 30 November in the year before the season, and 1 February to 30 June in the season itself.
- Outside the windows: a state football body can allow a transfer outside those windows only in exceptional and compelling circumstances, or where the handbook's 24-month rule applies.
- Existing permits: a transfer request voids any active permit.
