Possibly, through age dispensation under Section 4 of the AFL National Community Football Policy Handbook (February 2026). You can apply to play in an age group below your own on the basis of a disability or physical size considerations. Being a girl, or being new to the game, is not a ground.
- How to apply: your club submits the AFL Age Dispensation Application to Play Down (or your controlling body's form) to the controlling body. A parent or guardian must consent in writing if you are under 18.
- Medical certificate: you need a certificate from a medical specialist in a relevant field, completed within three months before you apply, giving the clinical reason.
- What is weighed up: the effect on your ability to take part against the oldest players in your age group, what reasonable adjustments were tried to keep you in your age group, your safety and the safety of others.
- How long it lasts: one season. For a disability, the specialist can recommend two seasons.
- Which group: unless the medical advice says otherwise, you go to the next lowest age group.
- Appeal: a refusal can be appealed under Section 26 of the handbook.
