Eight teams play in the 2026 Toyota AFL Open: New South Wales/ACT, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia and RSL Active.
- Days one and two: a lightning round in which every team plays every other team once.
- Ladder points: win 4, draw 2, loss 0. A forfeit gives 4 points to the team that receives it and 0 to the team that forfeits. Teams level on points are separated by the AFL percentage formula.
- Divisions: after the lightning round, 1st to 4th form Division 1 and 5th to 8th form Division 2. Each division plays finals, ending in a Grand Final and a third-place playoff.
- Finals eligibility: you must have taken the field in at least half of your team's fixtured matches to play in a finals match (the AFL can grant an exemption for injured players with medical advice).
- Drawn finals: a five minute break, then two five minute halves with a two minute break between them. If still tied, play resumes two minutes after the final siren and the first team to score wins.
State and territory teams pick their squads from players registered in a league affiliated in that state or territory, or players who permanently live there.
