All sports wheelchairs must be approved by the state or territory representative at team selection, and an AFL representative inspects every chair before its first game. A chair that does not meet the specifications cannot be used in a match. The chair must:
- have a seat strap, which you wear at all times while playing
- have foot bars adjusted so your feet sit behind the edge of the bar
- have one or two anti-tip devices, using no more than two small castors in total, at the rear, not protruding past the line of the rear wheels, and no more than 2 cm off the floor
- have a front fender bar no more than 11 cm (to the centre of the bar) off the floor
- have rear wheels no bigger than 27 inches in diameter
- have a maximum frame height of 58 cm, including the cushion
- have no protruding footplates or parts, and padding over all sharp or protruding parts
- have a soft covering on any rear bar, and coloured tyres that do not mark the floor
- not be a "rugby wheelchair" or an "everyday wheelchair"
In play, it is a free kick if your backside rises from the seat or your feet are not on the footplate behind the footbar. You may strap your feet down but you do not have to.
