Yes, for most age groups. Under the SLSA Surf Sports Manual (38th Edition), the relevant award for Under 17, Under 19, Under 21, Under 23, Open, Senior and Masters competitors is the Bronze Medallion, and you must be proficient in it to compete in championships. Under 15s use the Surf Rescue Certificate.
- A member who turns 15 during the season and gains the Bronze Medallion can compete in Under 17 team events and Under 19 to Open surf boat competition, and can be a handler in surf belt races (but cannot compete on a ski until in the Under 17 category).
- Surf boat sweeps must hold a proficient Bronze Medallion.
- Members who have met the Bronze Medallion prerequisites but do not yet hold the award can compete in non-championship competition for a maximum of 120 days from joining SLSA.
- Competitors must also meet their patrol and/or service commitments under SLSA Competition Eligibility Policy 5.04.
