Under Rules of Rowing 4-104.1(c), a Youth is a competitor who does not turn 19 during the current calendar year. A rower who turns 19 this year can still count as a Youth if they won't turn 20 this year and have been continuously enrolled full time in high school working toward a diploma.
So a rower stops being a Youth:
- After December 31 of the year they turn 18 (the U19 limit), or
- For a full-time high school student who qualifies for the extension, when they finish 12th grade, provided they were a full-time student within the year of their 19th birthday (U20)
Nobody older than U20 can ever race as a Youth. The rule applies to coxswains too.
Other age bands used at some regattas:
| Category | Eligible until |
|---|---|
| U19 | Dec 31 of the year you turn 18 |
| U17 | Dec 31 of the year you turn 16 |
| U16 | Dec 31 of the year you turn 15 |
| U15 | Dec 31 of the year you turn 14 |
| J18 / J17 / J16 / J15 / J14 / J13 | July 31 of the year you turn 18 / 17 / 16 / 15 / 14 / 13 |
Youth races don't change a rower's skill classification (Intermediate, Senior or Elite).
