Every bat used in Majors must meet the USA Baseball (USABat) standard and carry its stamp. Bats approved under the old pre-2018 standard can't be used.
- Barrel diameter: up to 2⅝ inches. "Big barrel" bats are fine as long as they're USABat stamped and no bigger than 2⅝ inches.
- Damaged bats: a bat with cracks or sharp edges, or one that won't pass through the 2⅝-inch bat ring, is removed from play. The umpire decides whether a dented bat is still safe.
- Batting donuts aren't allowed. A weighted bat sleeve is.
- Pine tar: allowed at all levels from the 2026 season.
- Grip aids: thumb protectors are allowed, but choke-up knobs and similar add-ons aren't.
