Little League's mandatory play rule says every rostered player who is at the game when it starts must:
- play at least six defensive outs in one of the nine fielding positions (they don't have to be in a row), and
- bat at least once.
If a player doesn't get their mandatory play, they must start the next game and make up the missed requirement as well as that game's requirement before being removed. Managers who break the rule are penalized, starting with a warning. If a game is shortened, the league may choose not to penalize the manager.
Beyond the minimum, playing time and positions are up to the manager. Little League encourages parents to talk with coaches about their child trying new positions.
