At medical control the event physician or medical personnel check each athlete. They eliminate any athlete with a contagious skin disorder or any other ailment that would prevent them from competing at a safe level. They are the final medical authority.
- Braces: a medical brace must be brought to medical control and weigh-in for inspection and approval by the event physician, medical personnel and/or head official. It must not contain rigid, abrasive or sharp components (for example metal or hard plastic) and must not give an unfair competitive advantage. It does not need to be worn while weighing in.
- Inhalers: some inhalers use substances on the IOC banned list, and the athlete is responsible for knowing which. Athletes are strongly encouraged to use inhalers before the start of a bout, and can use an accepted inhaler during injury time if necessary.
- During a bout: the event physician can stop a bout when either athlete is in danger and has sole authority to decide whether an athlete may continue.
