WA Football's policy: a player with a concussion or suspected concussion must be medically assessed as soon as possible and must not return to play in the same game or practice session. "If in doubt, sit them out." Everyone has a responsibility to report a suspected concussion.
- The team's First Aid / Medical Officer must keep the player out and make sure they know the concussion policy. Confirmed and suspected concussions are reported on PlayHQ, ideally by 9am the following Monday.
- Your child needs a medical certificate and a graded return to training and play. The 21 days in the national guidelines is a minimum, not a fixed wait, and a more cautious approach applies to players with previous concussions.
- A second concussion in a season requires clearance from a doctor who specialises in concussion management. After a third in a season (across club, school and any other competition) WA Football highly recommends no more play that season.
- The free Headcheck Concussion App helps parents, coaches and trainers recognise symptoms and decide between ambulance, hospital or GP.
