The USA Basketball and NBA guidelines group players into four age segments, each with its own equipment and rules:
- Ages 7-8
- Ages 9-11
- Ages 12-14
- Grades 9-12 (which follow FIBA rules)
Players are grouped by single-year age, and a "playing year" runs September 1 to August 31. An under-10 team can include children from both the 7-8 and 9-11 segments, so the league decides which set of standards it uses.
