| Rule | Ages 7-8 | Ages 9-11 |
|---|---|---|
| Shot clock | None | None |
| Backcourt count | None | 10 seconds to cross half court |
| Closely guarded (5 seconds) | Not used | Only when the player is holding the ball |
| Clock stops | On any dead ball | On any dead ball |
| Time to shoot a free throw | 10 seconds | 10 seconds |
| Players on the free-throw lane | Up to 3 offense (including shooter) and 3 defense | Same |
| Substitutions | Either team, whenever the clock is stopped | Same |
| Ball advanced after a timeout | No | No |
Having no backcourt count for 7-8 year-olds lets coaches teach players before they reach half court. Fewer clock stoppages for these ages keep the game flowing.
